MYRTLE BEACH, SC — A 28-year law enforcement veteran pedals his bike nearly 1,100 miles to reflect the hundreds of first responders who have died by suicide, according to WMBF News.
Christopher Lowrance, a retired police officer from Charleston, South Carolina, will be traveling from Boston to Charleston as part of his “A penny for your thoughtsCampaign. Lowrance drove more than 4,000 miles during its last trip to raise funds.

“Officers take a small part of every call for service they respond to,” Lowrance wrote in his campaign. Facebook page. “Small pieces don’t weigh much. However, the weight of those small pieces adds up throughout a race. Sometimes officers get to the point where they can’t carry the weight of their pieces… their experiences.”
This year, the proceeds will go to blue HELP, a nonprofit organization that collects data on law enforcement suicides and supports the families of officers who have died by suicide. Last year, more than 150 officers were reported to have committed suicide, according to WMBF.
Lowrance is asking for a penny for every mile you travel on your bike.
