Sadie Robertson Huff reflects on unhealthy relationship with fitness: ‘If I don’t get 20,000 steps I’d beat myself up’

“Coming out of it, I was afraid to work out, because I was afraid I was going to get sucked back into that hole. Because for me, it was a matter of looks,” she said. “I think it was something where I was really hard on myself, so when I worked out, I think I noticed my body more and was afraid of getting sucked into it.”

Huff went on to explain what his relationship with fitness had been like in the past, and how he dangerously fueled himself with activity trackers.

“I had the FitBit on, and it’s like, the 10,000 steps. I was like, ‘I’ve got to get 20,000 steps,’ and if I don’t get 20,000 steps, I’d punish myself for that and all. So I had to get rid of that for a while.” explained. “I’m just going to take the FitBit off. Even though I liked it and it was fun, I was like, okay, this is not healthy for me right now.”

While she has come to accept her difficult journey with body image, Huff previously told Yahoo Life that she was pleasantly surprised when her pregnancy allowed her to embrace her body in new ways as it changed and grew, instead of criticizing it. As she settled into motherhood, Huff found that her daughter continues to inspire her to stay on that path. She told her trainers that with her help, her “mindset changed” when it comes to working out.

“It used to be about how I looked, but it wasn’t about that at all. It was really about what my body was capable of and how strong I was getting. And I told you this, every time I came, I was like, I have two kinds of goals. One is to do a pull-up, which I’m still working on… and the second is to be able to easily put Honey’s seat in the car,” Huff said. . “The heavier I want to be able to do it with ease, and I could do it. I was like, this is awesome. All the stuff I was doing with Honey was just, you know, I’m young and I can keep up and I can put the seat in the car, but it was more about, like, I want to do it hard. I want to do it easy. I want to be the best mom I can be. And part of that, to me, seems to be healthy. So that change was so beautiful for I was able to get in and it wasn’t about my looks, it was really about the strength that I was gaining.”

Sigh Announced in early November she is pregnant with her second child, another girl, with her husband Christian. During this pregnancy she becomes more comfortable with her body and her relationship with exercise.

“Now in the season that I’m in, I only asked Christian for an Apple Watch for our anniversary, because I’m in a healthy place. I can do that and it would be a good thing for me. In fact, help me stay healthy and on track, especially during this pregnancy,” she said. “I think sometimes you have to make decisions for the season that you’re in because you have to be responsible for knowing your health and where you are and your state of mind.”
