Senior citizens in Manenberg flex muscles with the help of new NPO | News24

Twice a week, Manenberg seniors have the opportunity to de-stress in a fitness class.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Mary Louw, the founder of the non-profit No Fear Fitness Team, puts seniors to the test at the People Centre.

He started the NPO two years ago to promote a healthy lifestyle and make a difference in the community.

“I started the NPO No Fear Fitness Team two years ago and we are six members who are demonstrating and participating in all the exercises. Older people need to exercise as it helps keep the brain, joints and wrists healthy. Exercising also helps the immune system, fights disease, and helps keep you from getting sick fast and for long periods of time,” she says.

Louw, who is a marathon runner, says the idea is to get retirees to be active instead of sitting in one place all day.

“I love what I do and share my experiences with our seniors. I am a runner and sharing my preparation when I am training to participate in a marathon or any race with them is gratifying. I also help them make better life decisions. So instead of sitting at home doing nothing, they can come to the center, meet other seniors and enjoy the two days of exercise,” Louw says.

She would love to take her classes to the larger community, as Manenberg residents face many social challenges.

“We face challenges such as gender violence, gangsterism, substance abuse, unemployment, school dropouts and teenage pregnancies. Even walking from one street to another is unsafe and also challenging.

“We make do with the equipment I have, but it is not enough and we mainly use chairs to do the exercises. We need yoga mats, different types of dumbbells, balls, jump ropes, and financial help to feed and drink seniors after exercise sessions,” she says.
