“And you know I did this years ago, even before mental health was on everyone’s mind. It was more like, okay, I’m shutting down today. Just subconsciously, it was something I’ve always done.” Williams added.
The 40-year-old has spoken in the past about dealing with anxiety about press conferences and coping with stress after playing matches.
“And now that I know it’s so important to put yourself first, especially mentally, I always have moments of closure. I have serious boundaries and I don’t let anyone cross them,” Williams said. “For me, it’s really important to make sure that, every day, I have a period of… at least prioritizing what I have to do. And then when I’m off, I’m off.”
The conversation comes just days after the tennis icon announced that he was “evolving away” of tennis sometime after the US Open.
Williams, who has spent 27 successful years on tour, is ready to face Emma Raducanu at the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night.
