Simu Liu got a positive reception from fans and critics for his MCU debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Liu’s arrival at Marvel paved the way for many opportunities for his young career. The actor joined the cast of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, while he was also recently cast as the villain in Jennifer Lopez’s Netflix movie, Atlas.
While it’s clear the actor has been successful left and right, a new social media post has shed more light on his current state of mind.
Simu Liu Opens Up About Mental Health Amid MCU Popularity
In celebration of the anniversary of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ theatrical release, lead star Simu Liu shared a candid post on Instagram to talk about how his popularity in the MCU affected his mental health.
Liu first revealed that Shang Chi “Changed my life completely” describing it as a “absolutely best trip” although he admitted that he also arrived “at massive cost:”
“Exactly one year ago, this little movie came out and it completely changed my life. It has been nothing short of the greatest journey… but after having some time to reflect, I know that this life also comes at a huge cost. Suddenly I was catapulted into a stratosphere where he didn’t have to be, and woefully unprepared to deal with the mental ramifications of a life lived in public.”
Amid his success, the MCU newcomer noted that he didn’t pass the “time needed to register with [himself] and prioritize [his] mental health:”
“I felt like I was coming off the learning curve, crushing all my talk and talk show appearances, but also neglecting to spend the time needed to check in on myself and prioritize my mental health.”
Liu shared that he filmed four movies during that time period and is currently filming a fifth soon after. In addition to that, the actor also published a memoir about his career and his life.
the Kim’s Convenience the rising star noted that he reached a point where he himself worked to “exhaustion” while taking the time to represent your community. Although he was very proud of his achievements, Liu mentioned that something has to change to move forward:
“I’ve shot four movies since then, I’m currently shooting the fifth, and I’ve also put out a memoir. I’ve barely had time to breathe because I was so scared to take my foot off the gas. I was SO obsessed with the idea of occupying a space and represent to my community that I worked almost to the point of exhaustion. And while I am VERY proud of my accomplishments and work ethic, I know that in order to move forward something has to change.”
At the end of his caption, Liu announced that he is undergoing therapy to prioritize his health and said he is “cicatrization” become “more than just a superhero” Y “a good and decent man.”

I’m healing and on my way to becoming more than just a superhero, I’m on my way to becoming a good and decent man (but also stay tuned because I love doing this and will continue to do so for many years)”.
Marvel stars are doing the right thing for mental health
Acknowledging her mental health is a big first step for Simu Liu, and hopefully it will have a positive effect on her path to recovery.
From a movie release during a health crisis to the pandemic itself, many would agree that it’s pretty overwhelming and could take a toll on anyone’s mental health. Despite Shang Chi gave Liu tons of opportunities, his post seems to confirm that something is missing, and that could be inner peace.
The fact that he is now healing is a good sign, and the actor could even help others by taking the necessary step to break free and prioritize his sanity.
