shawn mendes has announced that it is postponing its Wonder world tour in between mental health concerns.
In a statement shared on his Instagram On Friday, the singer explained that despite feeling ready to return to touring after taking a few years off amid the pandemic, the decision was “premature” and “come to a head.”
“It breaks my heart to have to say this, but sadly I will have to postpone the next three weeks of shows in Uncasville, CT until further notice,” the singer wrote in a statement. “I’ve been on tour since I was 15 years old and to be honest it’s always been hard being on the road away from friends and family. After a few years off the road I felt like I was ready to dive back in, but that decision was premature and unfortunately the road toll and pressure caught up with me and I reached a breaking point.”
He continued: “After speaking with my team and healthcare professionals, I need to take some time to heal and take care of myself and my mental health first and foremost. As soon as there are more updates, I promise I’ll let you know that I love you.”
Mendes’ fourth studio album, Wonder, was released in December 2020 and the world tour kicked off in June and runs through October before the European leg in May 2023. Mendes’ announcement comes amid the singer’s exchange that Disney Plus was the sponsor of the tour and a new social impact initiative would be attached to the tour.
The singer has been outspoken about mental health, penning the 2018 single “In My Blood,” which addressed feelings of anxiety. In April, Mendez wrote a letter to fans in which he discussed dealing with insecurities, writing at the time: “Truthfully, in his current form he is a 23-year-old who constantly feels like he is either flying or drowning. Maybe that’s what it’s like to be in your 20s, I don’t know, or maybe it’s just me… The truth is, even with so much success, it’s still hard for me to feel like I’m not failing.” He had concluded his message by assuring to his fans that he was “fine” and hoped his words would “resonate with some people”.
