Stroke: Taking two vitamin supplements together could hike your risk of stroke by 17%

A to study by American scientists, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2019, found a link between certain types of pills that combine vitamin D and calcium with strokes. The researchers believe the combination could cause atherosclerosis, a disease that occurs when fatty substances build up in the arteries. If left untreated, this can block blood flow to the heart or brain, ultimately leading to strokes or heart attacks.

Dr Safi Khan, who led the research at West Virginia University, explained: “A combination of calcium and vitamin D was associated with an increased risk of stroke.

“Other supplements did not appear to have a significant effect on mortality or cardiovascular outcomes.”

As part of the study, the team reviewed 277 randomized controlled trials involving nearly a million people.

The effect of 16 different supplements and eight different diets on mortality and the heart were analyzed.

It found that reducing salt and eating omega-3 fatty acids, such as oily fish, helped prevent heart disease. And he concluded that folic acid might protect against stroke.

However, it did show that supplements made up of vitamin D and calcium increased the risk of stroke by 17 percent.

The study said: “Calcium plus vitamin D increased the risk of stroke. Other nutritional supplements, such as vitamin B6, vitamin A, multivitamins, antioxidants, and iron, and dietary interventions, such as reduced fat intake, had no significant effect on mortality or cardiovascular disease outcomes.” .

Supplements that combine calcium with vitamin D are usually taken to support bone health, in older people for whom the risk of stroke is more likely.
