New Delhi: With temperatures hovering above 47 degrees Celsius in parts of northern India, it is imperative that we protect ourselves, especially children, from the heatwave. Excessive temperatures can make children sick very quickly for a variety of reasons. It can lead to problems like heat exhaustion or heat stroke, where they may feel dizzy, and experience dry and hot skin as the body fails to control the high temperature.Also read – Why is Delhi facing water crisis and when will it be solved?
In view of the heatwave, many states have announced summer vacations in schools to keep children as cool as possible and not allow them to go out in the sun from noon to 4 p.m. However, in places where the summer holidays are yet to begin, the National Disaster Management Authority has issued an advisory to parents and schools to protect children from heatwave. What does the guide say?
- School children should always keep a water bottle with them.
- Children should drink lemon water / buttermilk / coconut water / fresh fruit juice regularly.
- Children should wear light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting cotton clothing when going out.
- Cover their head with a hat and umbrella when out in the sun.
- Avoid junk food in summer, please! Go for fresh fruits, salads and home cooked meals.
- Stay away from direct sunlight, especially during peak hours play outdoor games in the evening from 12 to 4 p.m.
- If the child complains of dizziness, nausea, persistent headache, chest pain, and difficulty breathing, take him to the doctor.
