Supplements warning: The vitamin linked to a ‘rapid’ reduction in vision ‘over minutes’

A shortage of vitamin B12 can damage nerves, so it’s best to supplement the nutrient in people who can’t get it naturally. However, there is anecdotal evidence that certain people taking the pills have suffered from Uhthoff syndrome. These complications could lead to temporary vision impairment, according to experts.

Monika Wassermann, Medical Director of Oliolusso, explained: “Uhthoff’s phenomenon is observed in people between the ages of 40 and 49 who consume vitamin B12.”

It is also more common in women than men, according to the health platform eHealthMe.

Dr. Tariq Mahmood, Medical Director of Diagnostic Concept noted: “There is no legitimate research on the link between vitamin B12 and the Uhthoff phenomenon.

“Of 86,813 who reported taking vitamin B12 on eHealthMe, only 27 people reported Uhthoff’s phenomenon as a side effect. However, these experiences are solely from the patient’s perspective and are not confirmed by clinicians.”

The syndrome describes a set of neurological symptoms related to the demyelination of cells when the body overheats.

Increased body temperature can be caused by hot weather, central heating, illness or fever, and physical activity.

“It has three things, including ipsilateral anosmia, ipsilateral optic atrophy, and contralateral optic disc edema,” explains Ms. Wassermann.

“Eating food sources with vitamin B12 improves DNA synthesis.”

But a lack of vitamin B12 can also cause vision complications from myeloneuropathy and peripheral neuropathy, says the expert.

He added: “Some people may have optic neuropathy, which may show better progress if diagnosed and treated earlier, such as at the onset of symptoms.”
