A few years ago, filmmaker and author Tahira Kashyap Khurrana opened up about her battle with depression, and since then she’s been outspoken about the importance of mental health. She has often emphasized creating open discussion about mental health issues and squashing the stigma that surrounds them. And recently, at a community-building initiative called The Circle Of Happiness organized by the real estate firm Rustomjee, Tahira shared the stage with the eminent American psychiatrist Dr. Robert Waldinger, who is also the director of the longest-running study on Happiness by Harvard, and India’s First Paraplegic DJ Varun Khullar on Finding Happiness Through Hardship and Struggle at an event held in Mumbai.
Speaking of which, he said: “It is an absolute pleasure to share the stage with Dr. Waldinger and Varun. I had breast cancer. But I can’t say that my problem is bigger than someone who has a financial problem or a relationship problem. The problems are not bigger or smaller, everything depends on the state of life of each one. If a person’s life state is strong, he can face any situation.”

She also stated that practicing Nichiren Buddhism has given her perspective and helped her deal with emotional issues. “I also practice Nichiren Buddhism, where a lot of importance is placed on the importance of each life. Of course, we cannot sweep the problem under the rug, but we can face it positively with a change of perspective,” Tahira commented.
In 2019, the 12 Commandments of Being a Woman writer spoke to Mid-Day and recalled a time she was dealing with depression and ‘living a dual life.’ She shared, “My husband (actor Ayushmann Khurrana) was filming. He would spend hours at night crying, and put on the forehead of a happy person in the morning so as not to look like a loser in front of my children, who were then two and four years old… I never treated my body, mind and soul as one entity. I always thought that physical health was important and mental health toh kuch hota hi nahin hai. So, I did a lot of exercise. But I think the cancer was a manifestation of the negativity that I had been harboring. If I had gone to a doctor, I would have been declared clinically depressed. But I chose to cry every night instead of visiting one.”
October also marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Tahira, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at a precancerous stage in 2018, continues to advocate and raise awareness for early detection. In addition to working on movies, she has been working to empower women around the world to speak up, share and own their journeys.
