The truth about immune-boosting supplements

To protect against a winter surge in respiratory infections, some people “boost” their immune systems with nutrient-dense foods and supplements. For a subset, that’s in addition to social distancing, masking, and flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, which reduce the risk of contracting an infection or developing severe symptoms; for others it is their only defense.

They hope to use minerals such as zinc and vitamins, including C and D, to boost the immune response in the event of an infection. Although such efforts are unlikely to prevent infection, they could support a person’s immune system. But for the average person who eats well, exercises and gets enough sleep, supplements may not do much, says immunologist Scott Read of the University of Western Sydney in Australia, unless they are deficient.

If someone wants to consume additional vitamins or minerals to boost their defenses, “there’s nothing harmful about that,” says Carol Haggans, RD, a consultant dietitian with the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health, as long as the amounts don’t exceed limits. journals established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. “High consumption can be toxic,” she warns. It’s also worth noting that supplements can to interfere either Reciprocity with some medications, so it’s best to check with your doctor before taking them.
