There are many types of onions but it is not possible to talk about them all in one article. Here we are talking about only those 7 types of onions, which are used to make different types of food items in Indian kitchen…
1. Red Onion- This is that type of onion, which most people like to eat in salad, dry or stuffed vegetables. For example, bhindi, brinjal ka Bharta, Bharwa Bitter gourd or Bharwa Tinda etc. Its inner layers are light red in color, while the outer layer is of magenta shade. There is a pungency in its taste. And while cutting it, a lot of water comes out, due to which tears come.
2. White Onion- This onion is slightly sweet in taste and does not have that pungency in its smell and taste. This onion is used more in making bhel-puri and chaat.
3. Yellow Onion- This onion is white in color from inside but its outer layer is light brown and the peel is light yellow in color. This onion is more preferred for tempering lentils and curry.
4. Green Onion- The form of onion that is not fully developed and is having aal (green leaves) in it. Its vegetable is made by chopping onions with these green leaves.
5. Shallots- This onion is very small in size and its color and pulp are like red onion. They are used in making vinegared onions, which you enjoy with food in most restaurants.
6. Leak – This onion is small in size but it is not completely round but it is in some oval shape. Stems rounded at the bottom and tall at the top. It is used in making soups and sauces.
7. Large Onion or Sweet Onion – This onion is very big in size and its taste is much sweeter than other onions. That is why they are also called big onions and in some places they are also called sweet onions. Their peel and pulpy layers are thick compared to other onions.
