These include hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide and ammonia. Tobacco reaches the blood and lungs through bidi, cigarette, gutkha. This produces tar (organic chemical) which sticks to the lungs. This reduces the ability of the lung cells to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Gradually the process reaches cancer.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, tobacco-related cancers accounted for 27% of the country’s cancer burden in 2020 in India.
