The study showed that bacteria like Gram-positive cocci can cause skin infections in gym-goers. Antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative rods have been found on treadmills, exercise bikes and free weights. Specifically, free weights contain 362 times more bacteria than toilet seats, while treadmills contain 74 times more bacteria than public toilet faucets.

This study found that exercise bikes and treadmills contained approximately 39 to 74 times more bacteria than public sinks and even cafeteria trays. In such a situation, caution is required.
