Tottenham’s Bentancur doing extra training to improve his fitness

Rodrigo Bentancur says he has been doing extra physical training to allow himself to make the best possible impact at Tottenham.

Bentancur arrived during the January transfer window and has already been hailed as ‘amazing‘ by Spurs boss Antonio Conte.

“As soon as I arrived, I thought I needed to make an impact. I enlisted the help of Daniel, my physical trainer, who I also managed to bring here. I knew I would have to be prepared as the English game is so intense and so fast, so end to end,” he said.

“I needed to prepare on several levels, with my lungs and fitness for the speed of the game. Professional footballers have a lot of time on their hands, and that’s where ‘my uncle’ Daniel comes in,” says Bentancur.

“Spending your free time doing extra work and physical labor is positive. Since I arrived I have seen that mentality that Antonio has. That is something that I really appreciate and I also really like.

“He is the type of coach who is very intense with everything and wants his players to always give their best in everything, 100 percent all the time.”

Conte is a demanding manager, and those are the standards he is trying to bring to Tottenham over the course of his reign.

If the players respond, Spurs can really work and there were signs of that before the disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Brighton last time out.

Bentancur hopes to be a big part of Tottenham’s improvement under Conte and he’s certainly doing it the right way. Now the goal is to qualify for the Champions League, with the pressure in every game.
