Try doctor’s avocado method for ‘critical health benefits’

If you ask 100 people to cut an avocado into wedges, you’ll probably get 100 variations on how to do it. However, there is only one way to do it to get the most nutritional benefits.

Dr. Michael Greger, a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, took to his NutritionFacts.org YouTube channel to reveal exactly how people should cut their avocados.
Avocados have important health benefits, such as their high content of vitamin E and fiber.

They are also high in monounsaturated fats, which can help protect against heart disease and lower blood pressure.

But they also contain two carotenoid eye nutrients that are great for eye health, lutein and zeaxanthin, according to Dr. Michael.

Lutein and zeaxanthin filter out harmful blue light, helping to maintain eye health as we age.

But to get the most out of these amazing eye health benefits, we need to eat our avocados in a particular way.

Citing a study by Kalandar Ameer, Avocados as a Major Dietary Source of Antioxidants and Their Preventive Role in Neurodegenerative Disease, Dr. Michael revealed that “critical carotenoids are concentrated in the dark green flesh near the peel.”

Because of this, avocado lovers have been advised to use the “cut and peel” method of cutting an avocado, recommended by the California Avocado Commission.

Dr. Michael went on to explain that avocados can increase the absorption of the carotenoid phytonutrients in other vegetables.

This is because carotenoids are fat-soluble. However, many of the optimal vegetables for carotenoids are low in fat, including sweet potatoes, carrots, lettuce, spinach, and leafy greens.

Eating them without any source of fat in the stomach can mean that some of the nutritional value is flushed down the toilet because it is not absorbed.

So eating a serving of avocado with these other vegetables will increase its health benefits, according to the doctor.
