Undereating: 7 SIGNS you’re not eating enough and your body needs more!

The side effects of overeating are well known. But, did you know that there is something called malnutrition? Although it is hard to believe, undereating due to lack of appetite or food restriction can cause various health problems. Eating less can result in a deficiency of essential nutrients and calories. It can also disturb your weight loss process. Here are seven signs that you’re not eating enough and your body needs more food.

Nutritionist Lovneet Batra shares in her Instagram post: “Achieving and maintaining a moderate weight can be challenging and many people looking to lose weight often end up inadvertently eating less than they should to achieve that goal. However, not eating enough calories can be a concern. Here are some signs you’re not eating enough.”

7 SIGNS that you are not eating enough and your body needs more

  1. Low energy levels – Eating too few calories can lead to fatigue due to insufficient energy for exercise or movement beyond basic functions.
  2. Hair loss – Hair loss can occur as a result of inadequate intake of calories, protein, and certain micronutrients.
  3. Constant hunger – Undereating can cause hormonal changes that increase hunger to make up for inadequate calorie and nutrient intake.
  4. Sleeping problems – Undereating has been linked to poor sleep quality, including taking longer to fall asleep and spending less time in deep sleep.
  5. Irritability – Prolonged low-calorie intake and restrictive eating patterns have been linked to irritability and moodiness.
  6. Feeling cold all the time Consuming too few calories can lead to a drop in body temperature, which may be due to lower levels of the thyroid hormone T3.
  7. Constipation – A strict diet and lack of food can lead to constipation, in part due to less waste products to form stool and the slower movement of food through the digestive tract.
  8. Poor cognition and productivity: Lack of nutrients like B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and folates can decrease brain function and cognitive ability.
