UP cop refuses comment on Gorakhnath Temple attack accused’s mental health

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) had taken Murtaza to hospital for medical examination.

The chief superintendent of Gorakhpur Sadar Hospital, Dr. JSP Singh, on Tuesday refused to comment on the mental condition of the Accused of attack on Gorakhnath temple.

The ATS team took Murtaza Abbasi for a medical check-up on Tuesday at Sadar Hospital, Gorakhpur to show his hand injury. Dr. Singh further stated that apart from the hand injury, there were no other physical injuries on the defendant’s body.

“Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi has not sustained any injuries other than those already being treated, so doctors bandaged Murtaza’s hands and X-rayed him to identify other injuries,” said Dr. JSP Singh, the hospital’s medical superintendent.

“Such evidence cannot be substantiated to suggest whether the defendant is mentally incompetent,” he added. Previously, on April 4, 2022, Murtaza’s father stated that he (Murtaza) was mentally unstable and therefore had no intention of committing the crime.

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) had taken Murtaza to hospital for medical examination.

Murtaza was transferred to the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) headquarters in Lucknow on April 6 for investigations.

On April 3, 2022, a man tried to force his way into the Gorakhnath temple premises and attacked police personnel on duty with a stabbing weapon.

Not ruling out the terror angle by forcing his way into the Gorakhnath Temple and assaulting police personnel, the Uttar Pradesh government handed over the investigation to the Anti-Terrorist Squad after they arrested the accused.
