Democratic senators Amy Klobucher and Elizabeth Warren have given Meta until July 15 to answer questions about how many posts about abortion have been removed after the U.S. Supreme Court revoked the long-running right to such medical care.
“The report suggests that multiple posts providing accurate information about how to legally access abortion services were removed, often within minutes of posting the information,” the senators said in a letter to the heads of Meta and Instagram.
In response to a request for comment, Meta mentioned to the media agency in a tweet by spokesperson Andy Stone that posts discussing access to drugs are permitted when the content policy prohibits attempts to provide or purchase pharmaceuticals.
“We’ve found some examples of misapplication and are correcting that,” Stone said.
According to the tech giant, posts about abortion and other topics were accidentally overshadowed by banners marking “sensitive” content due to a meta-error.
According to a copy of a letter sent to meta chief Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram boss Adam Moserie, the senators wanted to know what measures are being used to flag abortion-related posts.
“As a result of the court’s decision, it is more important than ever that social media platforms not censor true posts about abortion,” the senators said in the letter.
For the first time, a pharmaceutical company applied Monday for U.S. approval to make its birth control pill available over-the-counter.
HRA PharmaPerigo’s subsidiary said in a statement that it was seeking to stay away from prescriptions for its product Opel, a progestin-only daily birth control pill – also known as a mini pill or non-estrogen pill.
The application will now be reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration, a process that would normally take about a year to complete.
President Joe Biden said last week that federal law offers the fastest way to restore U.S. abortion rights and urges voters to choose pro-choice legislators in the next election, ignoring the Supreme Court “out of control.”
