Uttarabodhi Mudra for quick energy boost and relief from mental health issues

Mental health includes emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects the way we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy decisions. Mental health is important at all stages of life, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood.

Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health. For example, depression increases the risk of many kinds of physical health problems, particularly long-term conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk of mental illness.

It’s important to remember that a person’s mental health can change over time, depending on many factors. When the demands placed on a person exceed their resources and coping skills, their mental health may suffer. For example, if someone is working long hours, caring for a relative, or experiencing financial difficulties, they may be in poor mental health. Education and restrictions on free thought are becoming major contributors to mental health problems.

Fortunately, our ancestors discovered a yogic hand gesture called “Uttarabodhi (enlightenment) mudra” that gives us some degree of relief from mental health problems. This mudra feeds the energy within oneself to get rid of the feeling of fear. Uttarabodhi mudra strengthens the metal element. According to Chinese philosophy, the metal element is associated with the lungs and the large intestine. It also affects the nervous system and is related to energy impulses. The metal element allows the universal Chi or Prana force to enter from the outside to the inside of the body. Replenishes the body’s internal energy reserves.

All five fingers are involved in holding Uttarabodhi Mudra. These correspond to the following energetic elements and chakras:

Thumb: The tips of both thumbs meet at the tips or overlap each other. Stimulates the fire element that corresponds to the solar plexus chakra (manipura)

Index finger: The index fingers are extended upwards and joined at the tips stimulating the air. Governs the heart chakra (anahata)

middle finger: Represents the sky (ether) and stimulates the throat chakra (vishudda)

Ring finger: It is for the ear element that stimulates the root chakra (muladhara)

Pinkie: This represents the water influencing the sacral chakra (svadhisthana)

In this way, all the energy chakras are balanced and synchronized by maintaining Uttarabodhi mudra. Therefore, it promotes energy levels within the practitioner.

How to practice the mudra

It is done by entangling all the fingers together. Only the index and thumb fingers are extended and joined at the tips pointing up and down respectively.

  1. Draw your awareness to the tips of your index fingers pointing vertically upwards and the flow of your breath

  2. Keep your hands near your navel at Manipura Chakra (solar plexus)

  3. Performing Uttarabodhi Mudra while lying down is completely acceptable. Just make sure that in this reclining position the tips of your thumbs rest on the lower end of your breastbone.

  4. Try to practice it for at least 15 minutes one to three times a day.

Uttarabodhi Mudra can be practiced anywhere and anytime. There is no such specific restriction on how to do this mudra. There is no harm in doing it for any period of time.
