Watch Former ‘Mr. Olympia’ Competitor Steve Cook Try a Challenging Gymnastics Workout

In a new video on his YouTube channel, professional bodybuilder and fitness influencer steve cook does everything possible to dominate as many gym he moves as he can in an afternoon. As a two-time Top 10 contender in the renowned Mr Olympia bodybuilding competition, Cook’s strength and conditioning are not in question, but his coordination and mobility will be put to the test.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been on the mat,” he says. “I’m not going to impress anyone with my flexibility, that’s for sure.”

After a warm-up of stretching and activation exercises, Cook starts off slowly with some front and side roles. “My goal is to graduate from the children’s program today,” she says.

Once past the “beginner” stage, Cook moves on to the kip, a gymnastics staple that resembles a muscleup, if a muscleup were performed while swinging from the bar. In other words: It’s pretty tough, and it’s about a lot more than just upper-body strength. “It’s one of those rare things, it’s all coordination,” says Cook.

Next up is another bar suspension exercise, the shrimp twist, which involves swinging your legs up and forward and tucking them between your arms, and some trampoline work. After that, Cook gets to work trying to perfect his handstand game, heeding the coach’s advice to kick slowly and get off the ground. “I give myself a solid C,” he says. “That wasn’t cool.”

“I know I can’t beat anybody here in gymnastics,” she concludes. “But I can definitely eat and gain muscle.”
