Watch Strongman Rob Kearney Take on 2 CrossFitters in a Deadlift Challenge

Following your recent attempt to break the record for the fastest time performing the “Randy” WODStrongman Rob Kearney, aka the “World’s Strongest Gay,” has just taken on another physically demanding CrossFit challenge. In a recent video about the former CrossFit Games champion Mat Fraser’s HWPO ChannelThe five-time World’s Strongest Man contender participated in a timed deadlift competition against CrossFit athletes Mal O’Brien and Jake Marconi.

“Rob clearly deadlifts astronomically high,” says Fraser, referring to Kearney’s personal record 970lbs and the fact that he lifted 805lbs for 4 reps the day before. “So this is a fun experiment.”

Kearney, Marconi, and O’Brien must each perform the following deadlift ladder in the shortest amount of time:

  • 2 reps with 385 pounds
  • 4 reps with 365 pounds
  • 6 reps with 335 pounds
  • 8 reps with 315 pounds
  • 10 reps with 255 pounds
  • 15 reps with 195 pounds

O’Brien, who was named the sport’s Rookie of the Year for 2021, completes practice first and Marconi sits second. Kearney finishes third.

“I don’t think I would have gone any faster if I hadn’t deadlifted yesterday,” Kearney says, acknowledging that this was a much higher volume workout than he’s used to in terms of reps, even if the weight was lighter. “I actually like to do touch and go, time under tension. I feel like it’s a lot more effective. I always get a lot more toast than doing dead stop reps.”
