Acclaimed Ghanaian playwright Ebo Whyte has lamented the country’s lack of recognition of mental health issues and the impact this has on efforts to provide support to those affected.

She noted that despite the prevalence of mental health issues, they remain largely unrecognized, hampering progress in addressing them.

“In Ghana, we don’t take mental health seriously, but at the same time we see how common it is and we don’t recognise it, so we’re not making great strides in helping those of us who suffer from it, because it’s not recognised, it doesn’t exist,” she said in an interview with GhanaWeb.

His comments come as he spoke about the motivation behind his latest play, ‘Takeover’, which is being staged at the National Theatre in Accra.

The play delves into often overlooked issues such as mental health and loyalty in Ghanaian society.

‘Takeover’ is not just a story set within the confines of a church; it is a narrative that resonates with broader themes of trust, loyalty and discipline in family ties, particularly between fathers and daughters.
