TUESDAY is World Vegan Day.
It has been celebrated by vegans around the world since it was launched in 1994 to promote the message of not using products made from animals.
Today, there are a lot of vegan available brands that claim to taste better and be more beneficial to our health than animal-based alternatives.
Jane Atkinson puts some of these substitutes to the test.
Chocolate
CHOCOLATE normally contains milk, milk fat or milk powder, but now there are many vegan products on the market.
LoveRaw is an “indulgent brand of plant-based chocolate” and I tried their Nutty Choc Balls.
They are sold in pairs and are made with whole hazelnuts bathed in vegan hazelnut cream, covered in vegetable chocolate and rolled in crunchy hazelnut pieces.
I love milk, normal things, so I thought I was going to hate them. But she absolutely loved them!
They could give Ferrero Rocher a serious run for their money.
Nutty Choc Balls are 42% fat and 33% sugar, compared to Ferrero Rocher at 42.7 and 39.9, making them a healthier option.
Priced at £1.69 for two, eatloveraw.com.
Sausages
THESE Amazon sausages are so much softer than the real thing.
But they taste amazing, with a hint of pepper and herbs that isn’t overpowering.
They are probably squishy because the main ingredient is water, followed by soy, potato, pea fiber, rice flour, chickpeas and aromatic herbs.
The fat in a regular sausage can be around 30 percent. These are 14% fat and 6% fiber, which is about five times more than a regular banger.
Plus, they’re only 71 calories each, which cuts about half the calories.
So as a healthy option, these vegan sausages are great.
I would definitely buy and eat these again.
Per Amazon, six plant-based gluten-free sausages, £2.50, amazon.co.uk/byamazon.
Cheese
NUSH Almond Chive Cream Cheese is made with 93% almond milk with live, gut-friendly probiotic cultures.
It is also free of gluten, soy, preservatives and additives.
For every 100g, it has 209 calories, 17% fat and 6.9g protein.
That compares to 211 calories, 14.4 percent fat and 11.9 g protein for the average cow’s milk soft cheese.
So it’s not as good for you in that sense, but it’s better than a lot of vegan cheeses that are packed with oil.
With probiotics and 60 almonds per jar, this is not a bad alternative.
Tastes great, quite spicy.
The 150g pot is now on sale for £2 at sainsburys.es.
