A brain tumor in children is a growth of abnormal cells that form in the brain or its surrounding tissues and structures. Many different types of brain tumors can occur in children. Some are non-cancerous (benign) and some are cancerous (malignant). Its treatment and chances of recovery (prognosis) depend on the type of tumor, its location within the brain, how far it has spread, and your child’s age as well as general health. As cancer treatment progresses significantly, several options may be available at different points in treatment.

How are brain tumors in children treated?

Doctors may suggest any of the following options for treating brain tumors in children:

  • Your child’s age, overall health, and medical history
  • Tumor type, location and size
  • your child’s tolerance to specific drugs, procedures, or treatments
  • patient opinion

Treatment may include:

surgery: Surgery is usually the first step in treating a brain tumor. The goal is to remove as much of the tumor as possible while maintaining neurological function. Surgery may also be done for a biopsy to examine what type of cells the tumor is made of for diagnosis. This is often done if the tumor is in an area with sensitive structures around it that may be injured during removal.

chemotherapy

radiation therapy

Steroids (especially to treat and prevent swelling in the brain)
Anti-seizure medication (to treat and prevent seizures associated with intracranial pressure)

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (also called a VP shunt.): A VP shunt may be placed in the head to drain excess fluid from inside the brain to the abdomen. A VP shunt helps to control the pressure inside the brain.

targeted therapy

Targeted therapies focus on specific abnormalities present within cancer cells. By blocking these abnormalities, targeted therapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells.

How is brain cancer diagnosed?

If you feel the above-mentioned symptoms, then first talk to the doctor about it and you can identify brain cancer with the help of the tests given below on the advice of your doctor.

For this, you can get neurological tests, CT, MRI and positron emission tomography (PET) scans.

A lumbar puncture may also be done for examination. In this test, a small sample of the fluid around the brain and spinal cord is collected to check for cancer cells.

A brain biopsy may also be done if there is brain cancer. This test gives information about the tumor whether the tumor is benign or malignant.

Apart from all these tests, the doctor may recommend many more tests to be done.

Types of brain tumors in children

Brain tumors can be classified as:

  • primary: starting in the brain

  • metastaticStarting from other parts of the body and spreading to the brain

  • Benign: slow grower; Cancer free. Benign tumors can still be difficult to treat if they are growing in or around certain structures of the brain.

  • MilligantCancer: Unlike benign tumors, which remain contained, malignant tumors can be very aggressive. They grow rapidly and can spread to areas near the original tumor and to other areas of the brain.

What causes brain tumor?

Most brain tumors have abnormalities in genes involved in cell cycle control, causing uncontrolled cell growth.

Patients with certain genetic conditions (neurofibromatosis, von Hippel-Lindau disease, Li-Fraumeni syndrome and retinoblastoma) also have an increased risk of developing tumors of the central nervous system. There have also been some reports of children in the same family developing brain tumors with none of these genetic syndromes.

Certain chemicals can change the structure of genes that protect the body from diseases and cancer. Research is examining parents of children with brain tumors and their past exposure to certain chemicals, including pesticides and petroleum products.

Children who have received radiation therapy to the head as part of prior treatment for other malformations also have an increased risk of new brain tumors.
