Nutritionist, Lavneet Batra shared the benefits of breastfeeding for babies and mothers on Instagram. The caption says “Every mother and her baby is unique, and the decision to breastfeed is an entirely personal choice. All health organizations recommend breastfeeding for at least 1 year, with about 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding.”

Below are some of the benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby:

for the child

  1. Reduced infection. Babies who are breastfed have been linked to fewer childhood infections, such as ear, respiratory and intestinal infections, as well as fewer colds.
  2. Good immunity against viruses and bacteria. Breast milk contains immunoglobulins. or antibodies, from the mother. This protein helps in strengthening the immune system of the infant so that it can defend itself.
  3. A healthy weight. Babies who are breastfed may have lower rates of childhood obesity than formula-fed babies.
  4. Meets changing nutritional needs. Babies need different levels of nutrients at different stages of the first year. A mother’s milk supply will naturally vary with the baby’s needs.

For mothers

  1. Improved recovery. Breastfeeding releases high levels of oxytocin. This hormone can help improve uterine contractions. It will also help the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size.
  2. Lose pregnancy weight quickly. Those who exclusively breastfeed may lose more weight postpartum than those who do not breastfeed.
  3. Lower risk of depression. Mothers can also reduce the risk of postpartum depression by breastfeeding their infants.
  4. Lower risk of some cancers. The longer a mother spends breastfeeding, the lower her risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
