World’s Most Expensive Drug: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of America has recently approved the world’s most expensive drug. The price of one dose of this medicine called Hemgenix is 3.5 million dollars i.e. 28 crore 58 lakh rupees. It will be used to treat patients suffering from hemophilia B.
What is hemophilia disease?
Hemophilia is a genetic disease. There are several types, but hemophilia B is quite rare. In this, the person has a deficiency of protein in the blood, which causes the blood to clot. This protein is also called ‘clotting factor’. If people suffering from this disease suffer even a minor injury, their wounds do not clot and the blood continues to flow. Excessive bleeding can even lead to death.
A single dose of the new drug will provide relief
According to the FDA, the HemGenix drug will prove to be very effective for hemophilia B patients. It can be expensive, but the cost of a single dose is less than a lifetime of treatment. According to experts, a single patient in America spends 21 to 23 million dollars (Rs 171 to 181 crore) on hemophilia treatment.
Currently, the FDA does not provide information on how many doses of the drug can protect against the disease. However, according to data, taking a single dose of this drug for many years will reduce bleeding and increase blood clotting.
