Causes of Cerebral Palsy?

Dr. Makhija says it is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the brain before birth but can also result from birth or early childhood.

Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy:

Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the brain damage. Spastic CP is the main type which can result in limb weakness along with limb muscle stiffness (spasticity), speech and swallowing difficulties.
Some may have problems with ataxia and some may have abnormal limb movements.

In addition to the weakness, inertia, coordination, and speech / swallowing problems a child may experience, additional symptoms include (not all of them) – intellectual disabilities, vision, and hearing problems.

Treatment of cerebral palsy

Treatment is mostly helpful in the form of speech / swallow therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy. Depending on the severity, several interventions can be performed to control limb stiffness – botulinum toxin injection and anti-spasticity drugs.

Early identification of the problem and early onset of treatment can significantly help to alleviate the disability associated with the disease.
