What does the study say?
Researchers have studied how people can stay alive longer by remaining physically active. For this, data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2003 to 2006 for people over the age of 40 were used, which were also linked to 2019 US population data and 2017 death records from the National Health Statistics Center. The study found that the total physical activity of the most active 25% of Americans over 40 was equivalent to walking 3 miles or 160 minutes each day.
From there, the researchers estimated that active Americans like them could increase their life expectancy by 5 years. If the least physically active 25% of the population remained as active as the most active 25%, that is to say, walked 4.8 km or 111 minutes each day, then their lifespan could have increased by 11 years.
