Treatment of superbug infections: A shocking revelation has been revealed in the ICMR study regarding the treatment of superbugs. The study found that patients visiting government hospitals for superbug treatment have to spend between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000 per day. The main reason this treatment is so expensive is the high cost of medications used to treat superbugs. Due to expensive medications and long stay in intensive care, their expenses increase, forcing family members to borrow money. The situation is getting to the point of selling the house.

At present, it seems difficult to provide relief to patients who come to hospitals across the country for treatment of superbug infection. The situation has become so serious that family members have to borrow money for treatment and admission to intensive care. It is even necessary to sell the house. In the study published in the international medical journal BMJ Open, around 12 medical institutes, including 8 major public and private hospitals in the country, were included in the ICMR.
what is superbug
Superbugs refer to germs, which are microbial strains. This means new strains of bacteria, viruses and fungi. When a bacteria, pathogen or virus develops resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs, it becomes a superbug. Medicines have no effect, so treatment becomes more difficult.
One in two patients face financial burden
In this study, researchers found that approximately 46.5 percent of patients experienced treatment difficulties. Such a percentage of patients are forced to borrow money to complete treatment. They even have to sell their property. It is clear that almost one in two patients treated with Suprag faces a deterioration in their health as well as a financial burden.
Looting even in the name of the ICU
According to the study, after being infected with superbugs, the patient has to spend not only on treatment but also on anti-infection drugs. In government hospitals, this expenditure can range from Rs 17,000 to Rs 20,000, while in private hospitals, the same expenditure is estimated between Rs 2 and 3 lakh. In addition to medications, you also have to pay a lot to stay in intensive care.
These patients become debtors
Researchers included the medical histories of 1,723 patients and interviews with 170 patients for the study. According to ICMR Principal Scientist Dr Kamini Walia, in government hospitals, in 53.9% of Enterobacteriaceae cases, 43.8% of Acinetobacter cases and 49.7% of Staphylococcus cases, patients had to spend the most on treatment and became indebted.
