People often ask me about the healthy foods and drinks that are part of my daily and weekly life. This is an important question, especially for empathic and highly sensitive people (HSPs).
Food is love to the body. nourish yourself well. I’m a big proponent of simplicity, so there’s no pressure for anything fancy.
These are some of my favorite superfoods for empaths. They are powerful from a nutritional point of view and also delicious, as well as protective and energizing for empathic people and HSPs.
But truly, everyone will benefit from these super healthy foods and drinks. I will add that these superfoods for empaths are also great for athletes and for improving gut health.
Here are eight superfoods that can help nurture and protect empaths and other sensitive people.
1. Green tea
I swear, while drinking green tea, I can feel this magical elixir healing my body from the inside out. (I also love black tea.)
Now used in everything from face washes to muffins, green tea is ubiquitous and for good reason. The active ingredient, EGCG, increases metabolism and also reduces inflammation and contains tons of antioxidants.
Choose organic loose leaf tea when possible.
spiritual benefit
Green tea acts as a protective element of your aura. Strengthen your energy field so that it is less vulnerable to infiltration and projections from other people.
2. kale
Trust me, I was scared of kale for a long time, even as I read about its powerful nutritional value over and over again. But, it’s actually easy!
You can skip it in 10 minutes; bake pieces for kale chips, a delicious alternative to potatoes loaded with saturated fat; or incorporate it into egg, tofu, and bean dishes. It’s on just about every superfood list you can find due to its high levels of vitamins C, A, K, folic acid, fiber, and more.
Adding a food rich in vitamin C (such as lemon) increases the absorption of nutrients.
spiritual benefit
Kale strengthens your limits, mainly from a physical point of view. It helps you say no when necessary. It connects you with the present moment and helps you stand firm in your truth.
3. Lemons
Acidic outside the body and alkaline inside the body (higher alkalinity is thought to fight disease), lemons make everything better. In the morning, try a squeeze of lemon in a glass of warm water to start your day with a gentle detox.
Add it to tea, salads, fish and chicken dishes for a nice burst of vitamin C and snack.
spiritual benefit
Lemon cleanses your chakra system by helping to move energy. It unclogs stagnant chakras, leading to a freer flow and therefore expression, health and balance.
4. Walnuts
Walnuts are a great source of fiber, protein, and minerals, and they keep you full. They are so easy and portable for those hungry afternoons.
Their fat is the good, heart-healthy kind. Just make sure you don’t eat more than a few handfuls at a time.
spiritual benefit
Nuts sink you into the earth, your body, and therefore your power.
5. Algae
Crisp and quirky, this Asian gem boasts a ton of iodine, one of the nutrients Americans are often deficient in. Iodine is essential for thyroid health, often a problem for women as they age, and is also important for fertility.
Annie Chun has a great line of natural foods including little packets of seaweed in flavors like sesame and wasabi. Or better yet, buy some all-natural seaweed chunks at the grocery store and add them to soups or rice.
spiritual benefit
Seaweed contributes to a more flexible mind, allowing a relaxation of rigidity and the entry of new perspectives.
6. Garlic
Odorous yet medicinal, garlic has antiviral and antibacterial qualities. Sometimes I gobble up a clove when I feel a cold coming on.
Adds a big burst of flavor (without the fat) to just about anything. Just don’t forget to brush your teeth or take some mint gum afterward in case of tight spaces or a business meeting.
spiritual benefit
Garlic drives away and transmutes negative energies. Your acrimony protects your well-being in more ways than one.
7. broccoli
A member of the cruciferous group of vegetables (which includes cauliflower and cabbage), broccoli is packed with phytonutrients that are thought to kill rogue cells before they become a problem. Research even suggests that Cruciferous Vegetables May Help Treat Existing Cancer.
I know not everyone likes good broc, but it’s worth a try later in life, even if you hated it as a kid. And you can fix it in various ways.
spiritual benefit
Broccoli helps you breathe more deeply, which in turn increases relaxation and a sense of calm, especially if you feel anxious or out of balance.
8. Organic coffee (mixed with healthy fats)
You may have heard of the “bulletproof” coffee craze in recent years. I make my own version and it’s a healthy indulgence. I make hot organic coffee in a Chemex, then add it to my Vitamix. I add a tablespoon or two of organic coconut oil and organic ghee.
Sometimes, if I’m in the mood, I also add a bit of raw honey, cinnamon, or almond milk. Then mix it up!
The result is a rich and foamy delight. Fats make coffee easier to digest, especially if you have a sensitive stomach or empath.
Fats grind coffee and I find my body assimilates it much more happily than plain coffee, which can cause jitters. It adds a boost of energy and mental power as well.
Limit yourself to no more than one (possibly 2) cups of coffee per day as a sensitive soul.
spiritual benefit
This drink brings a sense of optimism and joy to your energy field. Shake off the lower vibrations of depression and heaviness.
