Authorities to clamp down on illegal, problem gambling during Euro 2024

THE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN WILL BE CARRIED OUT DURING THE EURO

Public education and outreach efforts by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) will be strengthened during the tournament, MHA and MSF said.

Advertisements will be shown on television, newspapers, outdoor screens, as well as digital and social media platforms to warn the public about the harms of excessive betting on football.

“It’s easy to get carried away with betting in the middle of the excitement of the games. We urge everyone to exercise personal responsibility and encourage family members, neighbors and friends to be vigilant for those who may be affected by problem gambling,” said Sim Gim Guan, president of NCPG.

NCPC will run a campaign, along with advertisements, on various platforms, from television to social media, and will use digital banners to warn about the risks of gambling with illegal operators. Warranties will also be distributed at community events.

Authorities urged the public not to place bets with illegal gambling operators and to exercise responsibility when gambling.

“Family, friends and the community also play an important role in encouraging people with gambling addiction to seek help,” MHA and MSF said, adding that problem gamblers can call the National Helpline regarding Problem Gambling at 1800-6-668-668 or use the web chat on the NCPG website.

Anyone found guilty of illegal gambling faces a fine of up to S$500,000 and a jail term of up to seven years. Repeat offenders face a fine of up to S$700,000 and a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
