NANAIMO — The province’s Independent Investigations Bureau cleared local troopers of wrongdoing after a woman broke her foot following an interaction with police.

A woman, who had been reported missing after leaving her adult home, was located on the night of March 29, 2022 at the Port Place Mall. She was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act and her officers took her to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

During her hospital stay, the woman underwent surgery for a broken foot, prompting an investigation by the IOI that involved reviewing medical records, witness statements and surveillance video.

“Based on this evidence, the CCD (Chief Civilian Director) has determined that the injury did not occur while the woman was in police custody or in the presence of the police, but approximately four hours after the police had left the hospital.” , a statement. of the IOI reading.
