Reached for euthanasia
The Mirror reported that in 2020 Shanti approached an organization advocating the right to “death with dignity” and asked them to perform euthanasia for “excruciating psychiatric suffering”.
According to the University of Missouri School of Medicine, euthanasia is the practice of ending a patient’s life to limit their suffering. The patient in question would normally be terminally ill or experience great pain and suffering.
The practice is legal in Belgium for a person who is in “a medically useless condition of constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be relieved, as a result of a serious and incurable disorder caused by illness or accident”.
According to the Belgian news service RTBF, Shanti’s formal request to be euthanized was approved earlier this year by two psychiatrists.
