Virus-related cancer: Cancer diseases are increasing rapidly. According to WHO, in 2023, there were more than 14,00,000 cases of cancer in India. According to a study published in the Lancet Regional Health Journal, in 2021, approximately 10,000,000 deaths in the country were due to cancer alone. Until now, it was believed that cancer occurs due to poor lifestyle, poor diet, genetics and pollution, but very few people know that there are 14 types of cancer that can also be caused by viruses (virus-related cancers). Tell us about cancer caused by viruses…

1. Human papillomavirus virus

Cervical cancer is a common cancer in women. Most of its cases are reported at the late stage. It is a major cause of death among women. This cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted from men’s bodies to women during physical relations. The HPV virus also causes cancer of the uterus, private parts, throat and vulva. To avoid these five cancers caused by the HPV virus, their rapid identification is very important.

2. Epstein-Barr virus

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a herpes virus that is spread through saliva. EBV can cause Burkitt’s lymphoma, certain types of Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, and stomach cancer. Burkitt lymphoma is a dangerous cancer that forms lumps in the neck, waist and lymph nodes.

3. Hepatitis C and B viruses

The hepatitis C virus is spread from person to person through infected blood. This causes liver cancer. This virus is also responsible for non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer.

5. Felineukemia virus

Feline leukemia virus is also known as human T lymphotrophic virus (HTLV-1). It is the cause of leukemia, i.e. blood cancer and lymphoma cancer. This virus is transmitted through infected semen and blood. Adenovirus is also a dangerous virus, which can increase the risk of bladder cancer. Likewise, there is a risk of brain tumors and bone cancer due to the simian virus.

6. Merkel cell polyomavirus

Most people are infected with Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) during childhood. This virus has no symptoms, but in people with weak immunity it can cause Merkel cell cancer.

7. HIV

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is spread through sex, but this virus never directly causes cancer. Researchers believe that this cancer first attacks people with low immunity and then increases the risk of cancer. Cancers associated with HIV include Kaposi’s sarcoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
