Toto Wolff and Christian Horner believe that talking about mental health is important and should be done
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised his Mercedes counterpart and rival Toto Wolff for speaking out about mental health.
Before the start of the new Formula 1 season, Wolff spoke about his mental health, telling the sunday time he had been seeing a psychiatrist since 2004.
“I think I’ve had over 500 hours [of therapy]”I’ve suffered mentally, I still do,” Wolff said. “Getting help is a way of overcoming my problems and has helped me access untapped potential.”
“I’ve never had a problem with stigma. Some of the most successful people are very, very sensitive, and very, very sensitive means very, very vulnerable.”
At the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, Horner took the opportunity to praise his rival’s outspokenness and honesty.
“I think all the credit goes to Toto for having the courage to speak out about his mental health issues,” the Red Bull team principal said.
“It’s something that there’s a lot more focus on these days, and I think it’s something in this business that we’re very aware of and something that we’re looking to be proactive about.
“I’m lucky that I haven’t had any issues personally, but I’ve had… friends that I know who have suffered as a result of mental health issues. So of course it’s an important issue and I think it’s very good to bring it up.
“I think being able to talk about it is a positive thing.
“Like I say, all credit to Toto for having the confidence to speak out about his own personal issues.”
Wolff and Horner are at the top of a global sport and the Mercedes boss is keen to use his own platform in a positive way.
“High-profile people, who seem to have everything but are struggling, I think we have an obligation to say that we’re getting help and it’s okay to get help,” Wolff said. “Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka deserve a lot of credit for how they have spoken about this.”
Osaka has been extremely open about her own mental health, while gymnast Biles created a global conversation about the well-being of elite athletes at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
“I have to focus on my mental health,” Biles said, after withdrawing from the team final.
“I just think mental health is more prevalent in sports right now… we have to protect our minds and our bodies and not just go out there and do what the world wants us to do.”
Wolff driver Lewis Hamilton also spoke to Naomi Schiff on Sky’s new Any Driven Monday show about staying present as he looked to move forward after last season’s dramatic end.
“I think it was about taking everything away, taking away the seven-time champion as a racing driver and really getting back to being human,” Hamilton told Schiff.
“I am the same as everyone in that aspect, sensitive with emotions up and down, it is a roller coaster of emotions in this sport, as is life.
“For me it was unplugging from social media, which can be a great and powerful tool to keep up with friends and news, but it can also be overwhelming. So unplugging from that, unplugging from the world and being present.
“I was really present every day and I didn’t think too much about the past, but about how I want to improve in the future.”
