The drastic change in weather has led to an increase in flu infections and one of the best ways to protect ourselves is to control our diet.
These days there is a wildfire-like spread of influenza infection, the COVID virus in the country. News cases are reported every day and there is an increase in cases of COVID-19 and H3N2. This time, there has been a drastic change in weather with people wearing a jacket one day, then turning on the fans the next. Also, during this time, due to this change, there is often an increase in flu infections. So how do we protect ourselves? The best way is to adhere to protocols such as hand sanitizing, wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, increasing fluid intake, and focusing on immunity-boosting foods. While there is a long list of superfoods, there are a few that award-winning nutritionist Loveneet Batra shared in her Instagram post. The colors of spring have also brought the monochrome misery of infections like coughs and colds.
So here are some foods that can keep you healthy and protect you from seasonal illnesses.
- Moong Sprouts: The germination process itself improves the vitamins and minerals. As a result, the sprouts are rich in magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, and vitamin K. It also increases the antioxidants in the sprouts. Antioxidants such as copper, iron, and zinc are known to enhance the body’s defenses against disease and bacteria.
- Foods rich in vitamin C: Our body does not produce vitamin C itself, and therefore it becomes more important that we eat foods rich in vitamin C (orange/amla/capsicum/tomato/cruciferous vegetables), especially at the change of seasons.
- Yoghurt: The ‘good bacteria’ in fermented probiotics and natural sources like yogurt naturally help boost your immunity, thus improving your ability to stay safe this flu season.
- Garlic: A naturally occurring chemical ingredient called allicin in garlic has amazing antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help fight bacteria and viruses and therefore reduce your risk of catching a cold or flu.
- Papaya: Papaya, this fruit improves digestion due to its high fiber content and papain enzyme. It is also rich in vitamin C, which helps improve immunity.
- Drumsticks: High in vitamin C and antioxidants, drumstick helps fight the common cold, flu, and ward off various common infections. The drumstick blessed with a large amount of essential B vitamins like thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in stimulating the secretion of digestive juices and helps in the proper functioning of the digestive system.
