Five on Friday: 5 unusual ways to work up a sweat

SINGAPORE: It has been a bumpy road to recovery for the fitness industry in Singapore.

Weather unhealthy routines and revenge trips have kept many away from studios and gyms, companies have also had to deal with increased competition as new competitors enter the market.

Many are also timing fewer steps as Work from home.

Regardless of what your daily schedule looks like these days, prevailing wisdom and common sense say some exercise is better than none – for both your physical and mental health.

If you need exercise inspiration, consider these new or unusual ways to break a sweat:

INDOOR BUNGEE

No daredevils needed, but some gravity-defying stunts are performed inside.

Think of the Matrix, but someone forgot to digitally remove the cable.

Participants are strapped into a harness connected to a bungee cord. After that, bounce back and fly to a fitter body.

The Center for Movement and Sports Medicine in Singapore states that bungee fitness classes burn more calories compared to regular exercises while being kinder to the joints.

The bungee helps simulate the buoyancy one feels in the pool, the center said, adding that its bungee can support up to 200kg.

Elin Dance Studio along Dunearn Road also offers these types of classes. The “fitness” option, which is described as stress-relieving, incorporates movements such as jumping jacks and dives.

For those who just want to have fun, there is a “family” option where parents and children can work out together, as well as a rhythmic “bungee dance” class that is for more experienced participants.
