Summer is all about striving to stay cool and trying to ‘beat the heat’. From the type of food we eat, the drink we drink, the clothes we wear, everything changes according to the season. And summer means a lot of sweat and scorching heat and sunscreens too. As we enter the hot summer months, it is important to be mindful of our diet and also to stay hydrated. Here are some expertly recommended lifestyle tweaks we can follow this summer season for the cooler summer days ahead.

Ruchi Sharma, Nutritionist and Founder of EAT FIT REPEAT has shared some lifestyle tips, some foods to avoid during the hot summer days.

5 things to avoid in summer

  1. Processed foods: While they may be convenient, processed foods are often high in sodium and preservatives, leaving us feeling bloated and dehydrated. Instead, stick with whole foods like fruits and vegetables for a nutritious meal.
  2. caffeine in summer: While a cup of coffee in the morning can be energizing, caffeine acts as a diuretic and can quickly dehydrate us. Replace that second cup of coffee with a refreshing glass of water or coconut water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
  3. Fatty food: These can often cause stomach upset and overheating, something to avoid in the summer months. Instead, opt for grilled or broiled foods for a healthier meal.
  4. Limit alcohol: Alcohol can cause dehydration and overheating, which is amplified in the summer heat. If you must have a drink, be sure to also consume plenty of water.
  5. Sugary drinks: Sugary drinks may taste great, but they are often loaded with empty calories and can be dehydrating. Instead, stick with water, coconut water, or infused water for a refreshing and hydrating drink.

When we wear tight clothing, we don’t allow our skin to breathe and it can make us feel even hotter than we already are. Instead, opt for loose-fitting clothing made from lightweight, breathable fabrics. In conclusion, staying on top of our diet and hydration needs is crucial during the hot summer months.
