I Struggled With Depression For Years—But This Type Of Exercise Changed My Life

Nowadays, I run five days in a row, two days off, sometimes six days in a row with two days off, but I know that rest is really part of training. It took me a long time to get that change, but I realized that when I’m running I just need to go out and have fun, and it feels like a lot a happier, healthier place to be.

I try not to run the same route twice if possible. I like to change and have variety. I love new things. me I don’t really listen to music either because I need to be aware of my surroundings from a security perspective.

Other times, running can be fun. If I see a rock that looks manageable, I’ll jump. If I see a dog, I stop to pet it or take pictures. This is not a serious effort.

That said, sometimes it’s not always easy to stick to a routine. A week and a half ago, I hit a really low point. She was crying and lying on the bed, but she had enough willpower to get me dressed and dressed. My wife suggested that she go for a run and she would follow me on the bike for the first mile or so.

I got to the end of the driveway, and when I looked down I thought my usual route seemed so far away. So I started walking and then I moved faster with the next steps. I started jogging and by the third or fourth mile I felt a transformation. It’s almost like a stranger came into my house, and when I came back, I felt much better.
