What is the exercise routine of the Duchess of Cambridge?

The royals have been known to incorporate a generous hybrid of cardio and weight training into their lifestyle. From running to lifting weights, cycling and rowing, from yoga to HIIT, the sporty duchess’s workout routine is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

The Duchess follows a very varied exercise routine

I decided to follow a 14-day training plan that incorporated as many of the duchess’s favorite exercises as possible.

Day 1, 3, 5

  • 3K run
  • 45 minutes of weight training

Day 2, 6, 7

  • Spinning class of 45 min.
  • 1 hour of yoga

Day 8, 10, 12

  • 10,000 step walk
  • 45 minutes of weight training

Day 9, 11, 13

day 14

How did I find each exercise?

Weight training

Eager to seek expert advice before delving into weight training, I spoke with juliana leonardosenior personal trainer at David Lloyd Kensington who chimed in (get it?) about needing to know about weightlifting as a woman.

The Duchess has an incredibly slim physique.

“The key to getting a lean, toned body like the Duchess of Cambridge without bulking up is to do a lot of light weight reps,” Juliana explained.

“I definitely think the Duchess of Cambridge is a weight-trainer,” says Juliana. “There are so many benefits to weight training, from making you leaner and stronger to improving the fate of your bones, burning fat and helping with posture.”

As a total newbie to weightlifting, I found Juliana’s exercises enjoyable and surprisingly simple, but the next day’s burn proved that you don’t have to lift weights to feel the difference.

Run

Both Kate and her sister, pippa middletonThey are enthusiastic runners. According to the daily mailThe Duchess finds time to run as often as possible when she is in Norfolk, having enjoyed long runs with the family dog, Lupo, by her side before he passed away.

Going for a run every day turned out to be surprisingly difficult, as I think it requires the most motivation. I find running to be one of those ‘love it or hate it’ exercises, and I’m definitely in the latter category. I always tried to start my workouts with a slow 2km jog, or finish a sweat session on David Lloyd’s curved treadmills, which Juliana says are great for building endurance and working the core.

Cycling

While I’m sure the Duchess of Cambridge doesn’t ride her bike to pump Taylor Swift at 7am like I did in my spin class, we know she’s a hell of a cyclist. Before becoming the Duchess, Kate used to cycle near her parents’ house in Bucklebury, and she has been seen using the London Cycle Scheme bikes in Hyde Park.

I’m not sure if it’s just the London cycle scene, but I’m terrified of turning. I find the instructors intimidating, the weird cult atmosphere where everyone in the room seems to automatically know the bike choreography (yes, that’s a thing!) overwhelming, and the Ibizia club playlist is often too much for one Monday in the morning. . However, sweat is real, so you need to do something.

Yoga

I anticipated using yoga as my rest day activity to give my body a break from weights and cardio, but I often left classes feeling exhausted.

These stretches done after exercise will keep you relaxed throughout the day

Duchess Kate loves holistic exercise. Kate invited a yoga instructor from Mustique Island to her wedding in 2011 and also prepared for the birth of Prince George in 2013 with prenatal yoga sessions.

What did I learn from working out like Kate Middleton for a week?

Regular, routine exercise does wonders for your mental health

Once I got into the routine of wake up, work out, work, sleep, repeat, I began to notice a major shift in my focus, motivation, and mental health. I started craving post-workout endorphins and knowing that I had exceeded my fitness goals for the day before starting work was a much more rewarding feeling than my usual effort to wake up and drag myself to my desk to start work (ahem). .

I also started to feel exhausted around 9 pm, so I went to bed much earlier and slept at least eight hours a night, which is way more than I’m used to.

It’s not worth getting hurt

I really had to listen to my body as I approached the final days of the challenge to avoid injury. At one point I felt like I had gone too far with the cardio, so I traded a weight training session for some slow yoga at home, and I know my body thanked me.

All before 9 AM! No wonder my muscles ached…

It’s always hard to find the right balance between exercise and rest, especially if you suddenly increase the amount of exercise you’re doing.

You have to increase your food intake.

We hear a lot about ‘calorie deficit’ being the key to weight loss, but very little about the importance of eating enough calories to maintain energy for exercise. If I had continued to eat the same as usual while tripling my daily exercise for this challenge, I’m pretty sure I would have passed out on day three.

I noticed that around the fourth day of the challenge I would start to wake up very hungry and go to bed with what appeared to be an empty stomach. That’s when I knew I wasn’t giving my body enough fuel to power my workouts. Some days, my Apple Watch would tell me that I had burned over 3,000 calories in one day, so it’s no wonder I started feeling weak and dizzy when I hadn’t eaten enough.

Still keeping my diet healthy, I added more protein and lots of fresh vegetables to give my body a boost. And I never denied myself a gift (or two) when I felt like it.

Don’t underestimate the power of yoga

Weight training may have left me exhausted and sweaty, but it was always after yoga that my body felt like it had worked the hardest. Not only was my core on fire at the end of each class, but my upper back and chest muscles were seriously struggling after a sweaty session of Chaturanga Dandasanas (low plank holds).

yoga-at-home

Rest days were a great opportunity to do yoga at home

Yoga has shown benefits for the core, posture, and stability of the body, so it’s no surprise that the Duchess incorporates yoga into her lifestyle as a way to relax and promote muscle strength.

All bodies are different.

As much as I would have loved to wake up to the Duchess of Cambridge’s lean, toned physique on the last day of the challenge (A Girl Can Dream), I had to be realistic with my goals.

exercise

Fitness progress takes a lot of time and commitment.

Fitness is a lifestyle and requires a lot of commitment and dedication. So even though the physical changes to my body were minimal despite my disciplined approach to the challenge, that doesn’t mean I was a complete failure. I explored new styles of exercise, took on the dreaded weight section of the gym, and achieved my first 5K in months.

Aesthetically, the changes may be small. Mentally, I am more than ready to take on my next Kate Middleton workout and continue to explore the potential of my fitness goals.
