Monkeypox : The cases of monkeypox are increasing continuously. Meanwhile, many questions related to this problem are running in the minds of people. An important question in these questions is whether monkeypox is a virus or a disease? For information about this topic, we have a conversation with Dr Gunjan Mittal, a physician at Max Hospital, Noida. The doctor says that monkeypox is a virus, which is spread from animals to humans. Most of its symptoms are like smallpox. However, it is believed to be less severe than smallpox. It has also been confirmed by the WHO that although the symptoms of monkeypox are similar to smallpox, it is less severe than smallpox.
What do experts say?
Doctor Gunjan Mittal says that the monkeypox virus is a double-stranded DNA virus, which belongs to the orthopoxvirus genus of the family Poxviridae.
There are two distinct genetic groups of monkeypox viruses: the Central African (Congo Basin) clade and the West African clade. The virus spread from the Congo Basin clade, ie Central African, is considered more serious and highly contagious.
Which animals can spread monkeypox?
The doctor says that monkeypox virus can spread from different species of animals. It includes major species like Congo rope squirrel, tree squirrel, Gambian pouched rat, dormice, etc. However, it is a bit difficult to say precisely about the natural history of the monkeypox virus. The doctor says that more research is still needed for the complete information about monkeypox virus. At present, many researches are being done on this.
