Millennial Mom’s Tryst With Mental Health And How Can We Help

Millennial moms are relatively more sensitized to the concept of mental health and self-care, but they struggle to strike that balance.

Motherhood means embarking on a unique journey of life. The experience cannot be justified in a few words, sentences or paragraphs. It is not a mere experience but an emotion that only mothers can relate to. On this journey, moms invest too much of themselves in their little ones, in their families, and too often tend to hold their physical and mental health in check. But some say these are the things of the past and new age moms know better. Sure it is, but it’s not entirely true. Moms will always be moms and somewhere they will all lose their self love time. Mental health in particular, takes a backseat.

While millennial moms seem to have a better understanding of self-love, self-care, and mental health, they also lag behind. According to Carina, founder of Humm Care, “For new mothers, mental health should take as much priority as their physical health. 75% of new mothers in India experience postpartum anxiety (PPA), 25% of new mothers in India experience postpartum depression (PPD), and approximately 8-10% of new fathers in India experience symptoms of PPA and PPD . A new parent can reach out to a mental health professional, such as a therapist or counselor, for 1:1 hands-on support. ”

BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT?

In the contemporary era, the hustle culture has taken over the world. It’s like a race against time for everything. The advent of technology faced with a fast-paced life and the need to be ambitious affects our bodies in subtle ways that we don’t really comprehend on the fly. The quotient of a sedentary lifestyle has gone up a notch with hours upon hours of screen time, distorting personal and professional boundaries, and increased consumption of junk food. So it’s almost imperative that millennial moms strike that work-life balance and on top of that, they need to pay attention to their mental health now more than ever.

How to manage the mental health of mothers

In an exclusive session, india.com spoke with Dr. Rituparna Ghosh, a clinical psychologist at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, about the mental health of mothers. Dr. Ghosh expressed how millennials are often more sensitive to these concepts. Here are some lifestyle modifications she suggested millennial moms can incorporate into their lives for a healthier mind and soul.

  • Be attentive: As a millennial mom, one has to be very particular about maintaining that balance between family, children, and one’s own mental health.
  • Digital Detox: After a long day, the only entertainment is to stay glued to the screen. But, it is essential to disconnect and do a bit of digital detoxification so that the mind relaxes.
  • Personal time: Take at least half an hour to an hour for yourself.
  • Personal care: Create a self-care regimen and spend time improving yourself.
  • To Do List: Keep a to-do list to balance work, family, and yourself.
  • Yoga: engage in some yoga. Maybe join a meditation class to enjoy physical activity at least a few days a week, if not all seven days.
  • good dream: A proper sleep schedule and sleep quality are important.
  • Healthy diet: A healthy, balanced diet is the key to a healthier you.
