Some studies have shown that men tend to be slightly less informed than women when it comes to Mental Wellness.”
“Act like a man!” “Stop crying like a girl!” “Boys will be boys!” Growing up, everyone has heard these phrases, regardless of gender, age, and caste. One should be glad that the patriarchy hates everyone equally! On a serious note, though these are so called ideal macho types of stereotypical male figures who don’t have feelings, wait, no, it’s the one who doesn’t talk about their feelings and needs help. Yes, they need help. Feelings are not to be belittled, mocked, or swept under the proverbial rug! Feelings must be expressed in words and actions!
Love must be shown, admiration must be expressed. We also need to address the not-so-pleasant feelings of hate, greed, and jealousy. The fundamental cause of these last three is found in the inability to freely express their opinions. Boys, like girls, should be equal in expression and social-emotional learning. Now there is even a mindfulness assessment if you can be a top notch professional in the corporate settings here in India! This is because it indicates longevity, teamwork, and leadership qualities. Appropriate vulnerability is a quality sought after in men today. However, social norms and misconceptions cannot lead to any change that is happening across India till date, from the most educated to the least. For example, imagine that a man reached out to his colleague, manager, or partner for help and shared his problems. Most of the time they can be dismissed or not taken seriously. There are ideas in society that it is “frowned upon” for men to show some vulnerability. Meanwhile, if it was a woman then it would be much more accepted. This is leading to what we call a gender empathy gap.
