According to data compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO), about 3.5 billion people are affected by oral diseases. The WHO stated that “oral diseases are caused by a variety of modifiable risk factors common to many noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including sugar consumption, tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption and poor hygiene, and its underlying social and commercial determinants”.

How does oral health affect general health?

Endocarditis: Due to poor oral hygiene, sometimes the heart is also put at risk. This condition is an infection that develops in the inner lining of the heart chambers or valves. It can be caused by the entry of bacteria from the mouth. If it spreads in the bloodstream, it causes a serious infection.

Pneumonia: While there is still more research to be done to establish a strong relationship between poor oral hygiene and pneumonia. However, according to some studies, when harmful bacteria due to poor hygiene enter the lungs from the mouth, they cause pneumonia and respiratory problems.

Pregnancy problems: Severe deterioration of the gums and soft tissues around the teeth leads to the periodontist. In addition, it can cause complications during pregnancy, such as low birth weight or premature labor.

How to improve oral health

  • Brushing is the key: It is important to brush your teeth twice a day. A soft-bristled brush is generally recommended.
  • Floss after brushing to remove tiny food particles that cannot be removed by brushing.
  • Limit sugary foods and drinks.
  • Too much tobacco and alcohol also causes discoloration of the teeth. So limit consumption.
  • Timely replacement of the toothbrush after three to four months.
  • Get regular dental checkups.
