How harmful is keratin treatment?
A recent study report published in the “New England Journal of Medicine” indicates that keratin straightening products contain glyoxylic acid, which can quickly increase the risk of acute kidney injury. Similar results were also observed in a study report published in the American Journal of Kidney Disease.
Researchers identified 26 such patients in Israel who had used keratin-based straightening to straighten their hair. All suffered from severe acute kidney injury. According to the study, 7 of these patients underwent renal biopsy, of which 6 had tratubular calcium oxalate deposition and one had microcalcification in the tubular cells.
What effect does carotene treatment have on the kidneys?
Previously, formaldehyde had been found in keratin-based straightening products, which had harmful effects on hair, eyes and skin. Later, formaldehyde was transformed into glycolic acid. It seemed then that there would be no harm in using its keratin products, but in the report published in “The New England Journal of Medicine” its disadvantages were also mentioned.
Experts say that when glycolic acid begins to metabolize, more glyoxylic acid is formed and later it forms oxalate. This causes kidney damage. When glycolic acid dissolves in the blood, it turns into oxalate, which can make kidney problems worse.
Keratin Hair Treatment Precautions
Glycolic acid is also used in many beauty products like facial products, toners, serums and moisturizers. However, due to their very small amount, they do not have a particular negative effect on the kidneys. But keratin hair products contain a high amount of acid, which can increase the risk.
In such a situation, during keratin hair treatment, ventilation of that room should be properly maintained. Gloves and a mask should be worn so that they do not reach the blood through the nose or any other means. Apart from this, this treatment should be taken only after advice from a skin expert.
