Improvement exam: HC relief for studentwith gaming disorder – Times of India

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has allowed a 19-year-old student to re-appear for the improvement exam for class 12 as he was suffering from depression and internet gaming disorder during last year’s exam. A division bench of Justices AS Chandurkar and Rajesh Patil, in its order on July 4, said the boy deserves to be given a chance to appear for the improvement exam for his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) in the interest of justice. In his plea, the boy said he was always an above-average student and used to score 85-93% marks till class 11. However, when he appeared for his class 12 exam in March 2023, he was suffering from depression and hence managed to score only 316 marks out of 600, the plea said. The petitioner claimed that he was under treatment for depression and anxiety from July 2023 to December 2023. The plea said that he also underwent treatment at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Hospital, adding that he was diagnosed with internet gaming disorder due to which he could not appear for the re-examination to be held in July 2023. The petitioner said that he approached the High Court after the university rejected his request to appear for the re-examination to be held in March 2024. In the plea, the boy said that another re-examination is scheduled for July 16 this year. The court, after examining the boy’s medical reports, said that he was undergoing treatment for internet gaming disorder. “The authenticity of the documents is not in doubt. In the peculiar facts of the case, we are of the view that the petitioner deserves an opportunity to seek improvement in his qualifications as he was prevented from doing so earlier on medical grounds. In our view, the medical documents corroborate the petitioner’s claim that he was unable to take the said examination earlier,” the HC said. PTI-P…
