New Delhi: According to the Cleaveland Clinic, adaptogens are plants, herbs, and fungi that help your body respond to stress, anxiety and nervousness. These plants are often sold in the form of teas, capsules, and powders. Adaptogens are also known for their use in regulating hormones, further helping to cope with many external factors. Some examples of adaptogens may include goji berries, ashwagandha, ginseng, tulsi, turmericlicorice root etc.

adaptogens and mental health

Adaptogens can benefit both mentally and Physical Health. Although more research is needed to identify the precise function of adaptogens, they are suspected to work in the following ways. Upon encountering a stressor, our bodies go through a three-stage response:
  • Alarm
  • Endurance
  • Exhaustion

Adaptogens come into play during the second stage of resistance and help the body stay in it longer through stimulation. This helps keep exhaustion at bay. Some adaptogens are also said to create resistance in our body making us more immune to long-term stress.
