In today’s health-conscious society, many people strive to improve their diet and lifestyle habits. As a result, there is a growing market for foods that are marketed as “healthy” or “nutritious.” However, not all foods that contain these characteristics are as beneficial as they seem. Some so-called healthy foods may be packed with hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, and other ingredients that can counteract their potential benefits. Before making these foods a regular part of your diet, it’s critical to understand what you’re consuming in order to make informed choices.

Award-winning nutritionist Lovneet Batra warns that these five healthy foods can have hidden side effects if not chosen carefully. Here are the most common mistakes health enthusiasts make and ways to avoid them.

5 “healthy” foods with hidden side effects

  1. Dark Chocolate: Check the ingredient label for stabilizers, artificial sweeteners, type of cocoa used, and the nutrition label for total sugar content. Just because it’s labeled “dark chocolate” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s healthy.
  2. Protein grilled (overcooked) at very high temperatures: To avoid potentially harmful compounds, make sure the protein is cooked at a lower temperature and slowly. Pre-cook the meat before grilling, use a marinade, remove charred parts, use smaller pieces, and make sure to use a well-cleaned grill.
  3. Low-fat yogurt: Check the label for added sugars, emulsifiers, and sugar substitutes.
  4. Salads with creamy dressing: Choose your dressing carefully to get the most out of your salad. Choose hummus, cottage cheese, lemon or vinegar instead of ranch, cottage cheese or French dressing.
  5. Low-calorie sweeteners and drinks: These often trigger sugar cravings and negatively affect gut health. It’s best to use honey or brown sugar powder, but in moderation.
