The other day, someone emailed me and basically said: “I’m very interested in the Medifast diet. I’m very intrigued by my friend’s dramatic results, but I’d like to know if I can substitute Atkins with the Medifast ones.” For shakes at the grocery store.” I have to say that probably most of the questions I get about this diet pertain to the shakes. There seems to be an assumption that the scheme is defined by him. I understand it to some extent. These items are delicious, filling and downright convenient, so there’s a lot to like about them. But, that’s only one of many dining options. However, I will answer the question of how to replace Atkins shakes in the following article.
Why Medifast Shakes Are So Popular & Beyond Compare:I believe these shakes get so much attention because they are known for being very tasty while being very low in calories and carbohydrates and very high in protein and fiber. There aren’t too many diet foods that are able to maintain a good taste and texture while being so good nutritionally. This combination (along with other foods) puts you body in what I call the promised land which is technically defined as ketosis. In this metabolic state, your body starts to turn on and burn its fat stores because you are not giving it the extra carbohydrates that usually help with this task.
If you pick up and examine it like a skinny fast shake, you’ll see that there really is no comparison. Most “diet shakes” are actually full or sugar, calories and carbs and therefore are not nearly as effective in getting you into ketosis.
Medifast Shakes vs Atkins Shakes. which is better?:OK, let’s look at them side by side. I would look at Chocolate Royal for Atkins and Dutch Chocolate 55 for Medifast. And know that I’m evaluating them based on their ability to get you into fat burning mode. (Though I have to say that the Atkins shakes do have a chalky after taste that is nasty and typical for so many diet foods. I didn’t find it on the 55 version.) Either way, these two shakes are pretty similar in terms. Are. Protein, carbs, sugars and fiber. In all of these categories, either will get you into ketosis (so long as you stick to either diet for the rest of the day.) However, Chocolate Royale has 170 calories per serving. That’s almost double the 90 calories of Dutch chocolate.
I find this a deal breaker. It’s almost like having two meals (at least in terms of calories) instead of one. The whole point of this is to keep your calories low so you can get into fat burning mode. Why go through all the work and hassle and then consume a product that has double the calories?
What Exactly Are You Saving With an Atkins Shake?: I asked the person who sent the email why she wanted to substitute another shake. She said she likes that she can pick them up at the grocery store and that she finds them a little cheaper. This is not really true. These shakes average over $2 each. It’s about how much you’ll pay for Medifast, sometimes less.
And, I cannot stress this enough. You’re eating a wide variety of foods on this diet, and many of them are not liquid. You’ll also eat eggs, chili, oatmeal, bars, etc. And, most people order monthly and get food shipped straight to their door. You don’t need to buy grocery store products on top of that. If you do this, you are spending more money than you need to for something that gets you more calories than you would other wise.
If you use the coupon or rebate, you can basically get 5 Medifast meals for about $8 each (less than $2 each day). $10 – $12 per day for food you don’t need that is giving you more calories. It’s simply unnecessary when they provide everything you need.
